History
Formation and Early Years
The Falmouth Surf Life Saving Club was established in the spring of 1967 following a reported drowning incident the previous summer. A group of enthusiastic swimmers convened at the Town Hall to form a working group with the aim of setting up a Surf Life Saving Club at Maenporth Beach. Despite the challenges of limited resources and equipment, the club's founding members were determined to provide vital beach safety services to the community.
In those early years, the club relied heavily on the support and guidance of neighboring clubs such as Gunwalloe, Porthtowan, and Perranporth, which generously assisted in training members for the Bronze Medallion, the prerequisite for all voluntary beach lifeguards at the time. Lifeguarding was a physically demanding task in those days, as members had to contend with harsh weather conditions and limited equipment, such as the Reel, Line, and Belt, which were the primary tools for rescues.
Acquiring Essential Equipment and Expanding Training Programs
As the club grew, it acquired essential equipment, such as an Inshore Rescue Boat (IRB) donated by Mrs. Elsie Holmes, who later became club President. The IRB was a valuable asset for rescues and became a symbol of the club's commitment to beach safety. Members also experimented with designing and modifying equipment, such as rescue boards and surf skis, to better suit their needs.
The club's training programs expanded to include a wider range of skills, including surf life-saving techniques, first aid, and marine radio procedures.
